Adult companion services are a basic support service under Minnesota Statutes 245D.03 and are defined under the Elderly Waiver plan. A companion provides non-medical care, supervision, and socialization so an adult who cannot be left alone stays safe and connected. Companions do not provide skilled nursing or hands-on medical care, and household tasks are only done as an incidental part of being with the person.
What's included
- Supervision and a supportive presence so the person is not left alone
- Conversation, hobbies, games, reading, and other shared activities
- Accompaniment to appointments, errands, worship, and community events
- Incidental household help — a meal, dishes, or laundry — while with the person
- Reduces isolation for older adults and adults with disabilities living at home
